Blue Shield: the Red Cross for cultural heritage / by Yvonne Bos-Rops

More than five years ago the world was confronted with the destruction of the archives of Liberia (the first independent state in black Africa), the fire in the library of Sarajevo and the plundering of the monuments of Anko Vat in Cambodia, within a short period of time. Cultural heritage is and always will be very vulnerable. Threats come from natural disasters, such as flooding, fire, earthquakes. Furthermore, in spite of all international agreements, deterioration or destruction of cultural heritage also takes place in case of almost all armed conflicts, all over the world. Reason enough to found of the International Committee of the Blue Shield (ICBS).
