Blue Shield against disasters in museums / by Astrid Weij On may the 13th a firework factory exploded in Enschede. Most of the Dutch people still have a lively remembrance of the havoc after this disaster. Apart from the deceased and the injured, the destruction of house and home of the people living in the neighbourhood, the explosion also caused damage to the cultural heritage in Enschede. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe fortunately had a disaster plan at her disposal and had therefore been able to undertake action immediately in order to limit the consequences of the disaster as much as possible. The disaster illustrates the importance of cultural institutes to be prepared for disasters, from natural disasters to armed conflicts. That's the reason why ICOM Nederland took initiative to set up the Blue Shield-programme. Contents
